When young people join Cubs

Being a Cub is all about growing and learning in small but mighty ways. Here are some of the things you'll get up to with your new friends. Cubs learn by doing, and so will you. Some of the skills you develop will be practical, like knowing how to cook a delicious meal or give someone first aid. Others will allow you to become a master at your chosen hobby, or help you to succeed in whichever job you decide to do when you grow up.

But the most important skills you'll learn at Cubs are the ones that will make you feel confident and happy in your own skin.

What do Cubs do?

Race down a river. Tell stories by torchlight. Fall asleep beneath the stars. Alongside your Pack, you'll spend plenty of time in the great outdoors. Together, you might build a den in your local park, or create an edible raft out of sweets, or go on a moonlit hike through your hometown. Even though you might not be ready to climb Mount Everest just yet, you're guaranteed to have plenty of adventures on your own doorstop, because being a Cub is all about making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are.

Take a look at all the exciting things we get up to over the year.

  • Axe throwing
  • Cooking on open fires
  • Night hike through the woods
  • Climbing (at local venues such as Climbing Works)
  • Den building in the woods
  • Tracking
  • District camps with other troops from the sheaf district
  • Family camps

Lots of other activities working towards badges that represent the scout values.

Learn new skills

Cubs learn by doing, and so will you. Some of the skills you develop will be practical, like knowing how to cook a delicious meal or give someone first aid. Others will allow you to become a master at your chosen hobby, or help you to succeed in whichever job you decide to do when you grow up.

But the most important skills you'll learn at Cubs are the ones that will make you feel confident and happy in your own skin. We call these character skills, and they include things like integrity (which means being honest and doing what you think is right) and initiative (which means knowing how to take the lead on something without being asked). Whatever skills you'd like to learn, it's all about having the courage to try new things and learn from them.

Helping Others

Cubs work as a team to help other people. Together, you'll learn about global issues and what we can all do to help solve them. You'll also make an impact in your own community, through activities such as campaigning to save your local library, collecting donations for a foodbank, or planting trees in a neighbouring park.

How to join us

In the first instance, complete the small enquiry form below.
Cubs is open to all, and adjustments can always be made locally to make sure everyone can join in the fun. If you have any questions about accessibility, it's best to chat with your local leader as soon as possible. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure their young person has the best experience possible.

Lots of young people want to join Cubs and sometimes you might have to wait for a space to become available before you can start your journey. If there is a waiting list at the time of enquiry, parents and other adults might want to think about what they could do to help out. Regardless of skillset or availability, there's an opportunity for everyone to contribute.

Cubs Litter Pick June 2026 (item updated 04 June 2026)

One good turn deserves another (and a pizza sunset)

Cubs out litter picking around the local shops

Last night our Cubs swapped the meeting hall for the streets around Greenhill. On went the gloves, out came the litter pickers, and off they went to give our local patch a proper tidy-up. And the timing couldn’t have been better — as soon as we stepped out, the rain stopped. The sun shines on the righteous, as one of our leaders put it!

They worked their way around the shops on Meadowhead, filling bag after bag and leaving the pavements looking a whole lot brighter. It’s a hands-on way to live out one of the things Cubs are all about: helping other people. And they did it with brilliant energy from start to finish — such a positive bunch.

One good turn deserves another. To say thank you for cleaning up around the shops, the generous team at Sunset Pizza on Meadowhead treated the whole pack to two free 20″ pizzas and a huge box of chips. Not a bad reward for an evening’s hard work!

So it turns out there was no gold at the end of the rainbow last night — it was a pizza sunset instead 😂. (The gold must have been at the other end.)

We’re so grateful to Sunset Pizza for their kindness — it was greatly appreciated by every Cub (and every leader!). This is exactly what our community is all about: local people looking out for one another. A fab, productive night all round ⚜️.

If you’re passing Sunset Pizza on Meadowhead, do pop in and say hello — they’ve more than earned it.

 Trust the Scouts

You're in Good Hands.

My volunteer leaders believed in me as a young person.

I want a new generation to learn the skills, friendship and belonging I felt when I needed them most. I want to show that the outdoors is a place for all of us to be at our best, that Scouts is truly open to all.
