Funded by Adventure Sheffield and a great package from Rob and the Team at House Skatepark - the cubs had an amazing time
Two years waiting to get back to camp and it went with a bang. Over 200 Scouts, Cubs and Beavers from all around the Sheaf District joining in the fun and games.
Scouts out night tracking with glow sticks. A few wrong turns on the way!

Scouts enjoying a beautiful evening walk/climb/adventure on Burbage moor.
Teams of scouts following the Longshaw orienteering course, some easier to find than others.
Scouts enjoying some amazing weather and fantastic views during half term on an expedition along the Peak District's highest ridge. A detour on the way down gave the opportunity to see the Sabre plane wreck site.
2021 District Scout camp was a virtual one due to the Covid pandemic but this did not stop us having our usual fun. Our Cubs and Scouts even managed to win the Scarecrow building competition and 229 Greenhill won the overall attend Scouts group.
Here at 229 Cubs, we have not let Covid stop us! Via Zoom we have met to make Pizza, cupcakes, ice-cream, learned how to navigate with innovative new apps (What3words) and learnt all about our solar system, paving the way back to outdoor meetings where we are going to map the solar system to scale in a local park.
Every year the last meeting of the summer term before the break the 229th Scout tackle the Rivelin Valley river walk.
In 2019 we were joined by a Scout Group form the Hallam District and a large number of Scout's, Explorers, Leaders and Parent Helpers all got rather wet.
The activity begins at Carver Fields off Hagg Lane Crosspool where the group head down the paths through the woods to the starting point for the river walk. There is a section of the walk were 'river swim' is a better description as the water is around chest height. The river walk is always very well attended, enjoyed by all, even though the finish at the Rails Road carpark and waiting parents with towels and warm clothes is always a welcome sight.
Cooking on an open fire, also referred to as Back Woods Cooking, here you can see our cubs cooking jacket potatoes, pizza, baked apples, banana (with a chocolate flake) and hot dogs wrapped in cabbage leaves! (sounds bizarre, but works)! a core task of Cubs and often put into practice at Camps.
The Scouts started their ride at Ringinglow and rode the full length of Houndkirk to Fox House and back. They finished by trying out the mountain bike courses in Lady Canning's Plantation MTB Trail.
A big part of cubs is learning in a subtle and importantly fun way of how to stay safe. We had a great time at Battle Axe (https://www.battleaxesheffield.co.uk). They certainly helped us discover our inner Viking! The Cubs were thrilled when we told them they were going to throw an Axe and hammer and nails into tree trunks! Our programme is dynamic and diverse, but most of all fun and helps build memories that last a lifetime.
The 229th Scout trip to Bagshaw Cavern, Bradwell, Hope Valley, Derbyshire. The first of 3 trips organised as part of the Scout Caving Activity Badge.
Camping and building camp fires are the back bone of the scouting movement. The Cubs gain so much confidence at Camp and we do so many activities to keep them busy and of course learning vital life skills.
Working in the community is a key part of Scouting, here you see Cubs and Scouts working together on the DIY badge. Over the course of a few meetings and extra DIY classes on a Saturday, the cubs and scouts of 229th Greenhill Methodist made a selection of planters, bird boxes and herb gardens which we sold at Greenhill Library farmers market. As well as raising funds for the group, we taught the Cubs and Scouts the value of upcycling. All products used were destined to be burnt or sent to landfill. Raw materials included wood reclaimed from a leaders DIY kitchen re fit, pallets found in skips and at the side of the road and environmentally friendly wood stain found languishing in leaders and parents sheds, that were destined for the tip due to colour scheme changes at home.

We’re excited to announce that Dwayne Fields, adventurer and TV presenter, is the UK’s new Chief Scout
Dwayne’s been appointed as our 11th Chief Scout to lead our half a million young people and adult volunteers for his values, commitment to help young people, and outstanding leadership qualities. During his time as Chief Scout, Dwayne aims to inspire even more young people and adult volunteers to join from all backgrounds.
Chief Scout Dwayne Fields
Carl Hankinson, UK Chief Volunteer, says: 'Dwayne already has the respect of thousands of young people and volunteers in Scouts. He’s shown real commitment and kindness to Scouts in communities across the UK. As well as being an inspirational adventurer and TV presenter, he’s able to reach across generations and support Scouts serving more local communities.’
Born in Jamaica, Dwayne came to the UK when he was 6 years old. Growing up in North East London in Stoke Newington, with little access to nature, Scouts offered Dwayne access to the outdoors, new friendships, and opened new horizons.
When he joined as a Cub Scout, Scouts gave him skills, belief in himself and place to belong. Through his determination and support from his Scout volunteer leaders and friends, he set himself on a path to become the first Black Briton to reach the North Pole. He’s passionate about encouraging people from all backgrounds to explore nature, support their communities and be the best they can be.
Dwayne says: ‘I hope my story will encourage others to join our movement. My volunteer leaders believed in me as a young person and taught me to believe in myself. They showed me I could do anything I put my mind to, and others would help me along the way. Now I want a new generation to learn the skills, friendship and belonging I felt when I needed them most. I want to show that the outdoors is a place for all of us to be at our best, that Scouts is truly open to all.’
Ayesha Karim, UK Youth Lead, says: “I think Dwayne’s going to be an amazing new chief Scout because the bottom line is he absolutely exemplifies what it is to be a Scout. He lives by our values. He is consistently kind to anyone he meets. If you’ve met him before, you’ll know he just takes the time to really get to know you, and also truly talks with so much passion about Scouts.”
Ayesha Karim, UK Youth Lead, and Dwayne Fields
HRH The Duke of Kent, Joint President, says: ‘It gives me great pleasure to pass on my deep-felt congratulations to Dwayne Fields on his appointment as the 11th Chief Scout. As an explorer, a TV presenter, and someone who has already shown a clear commitment to young people and Scouts, I’m quite sure he will relish his new role. I wish Dwayne, and all Scouts, every success in the future.’
Dwayne says: 'I’m calling for more volunteers to step up and make a difference to young people’s lives across the country.'
Dwayne’s determined to help recruit new volunteers in every community in the UK. If you’re inspired to support young people and join the adventure find out more.
